The Borg Filter uses a unique filter design by Grant Richter, using Vactrol-based electronics. Where did the Borg name come from? Buchla Model 292 Low-pass Gate + KORG MS-20 High and Low-Pass Filters.
There are two separate filters in this module, each implemented as a 2-pole multi-mode. They can be linked as a 4-pole, or used as two independent filters. The 200 ms. Vactrol circuitry provides a certain amount of slew, giving the filter a very woody and warm tone. There is a voltage controlled amplifier mode as well (VCA).
The Borg also contains two LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators). Low frequency is a misnomer here though, since the oscillators are also (when switched to "Hi" mode) very high-quality, fully-functional, 1V/Oct. audio oscillators with temperature compensation and high-frequency compensation. (This statement applies to serial No. 13114/Rev. D and onward; older modules use a different LFO configuration. It is possible to upgrade older versions of the Borg Filters module to the latest spec; please email [email protected] for upgrade information. The upgrade also eliminates the interaction/bleed-through between the various sections in the module which was present in the original design.)
Please note that some variation in response of the vactrols is to be expected due to their nature, making each filter unique to a certain degree.
